Swatch has always kept one eye on the latest trends in art, the famous Swiss watch brand frequently taking inspiration from the art world and its latest trail-blazers.
The love affair between the trend-setting watchmaker and art continues in 2011, with Swatch watches confirmed as official partners of this year's la Biennale di Venezia.
La Biennale di Venezia is considered an important forum that seeks to 'illuminate' current developments in international art. The 54th International Art Exhibition will bring together artists from around the world and their contributions to the overarching exhibition theme: 'Illuminations'.
The exhibition opens on 4 June 2011 and will run until 27 November in Venice, which is drenched in the history and culture of art. The partnership enhances the connection between Venice and Switzerland's coolest watchmaker, following the company's spectacular 'live art' performance in the heart of the city in 2009.
Swatch President Arlette-Elsa Emch said: "We're absolutely thrilled to be a partner of the 54th International Art Exhibition. Art is at the heart of our brand, and has been ever since we started... and Venice is the most extraordinary place for anyone who loves art."
Along with fashion and sports, art has long been considered one of Swatch’s strongest influences.. Memorable Swatch watches have been created by noted artists including Keith Haring, Kiki Picasso, Alfre Hofkunst, Jean-Michel Folon and Mimmo Rotella. This creative spirit continues today, with leading artists and designers like Ivan Navarro and Enki Bilal contributing. This year, new designs have been added by American designer Jeremy Scott, whose 'pop culture'-infused creations have brought a bold, avant-garde element to the canon.
