Based near the Italian City of Florence in the town of Lucca, U-Boat Watches began production of their luxurious timepieces in 2004. The brand has become known for its ‘left hand configuration’ that incorporates its oversized crown of the opposite side of the watch to the usual positioning.
The left sided crown and the large size of the watch are amongst some of the special characteristics that have attracted celebrities such as Hollywood tough guy Sylvester Stallone to wear the companies timepieces.
The U-Boat Watches story
The story of U-Boat Watches begins in 1942. Engineer Ivo Fontana, a maker of precision instrument was contracted by the Italian Navy to produce a watch for its many submariners. This meant that the proposed U-Boat Watches would need to meet high technical standards and high standards.
The watches would have to stand up to military use in both the Mediterranean and in the treacherous Atlantic Ocean. The demanding designs were necessary. The watches would have to work reliably in a number of weather conditions and would need to be visible in a range of lighting types from the darkened interior of the submarine to the bright summer sun. The project was eventually cancelled as an Allied victory neared.
In 2000, Italo Fontana, Ilvo’s grandson re-discovered his grandfathers’ designs. The watches provided the stylistic guide for the creation of his first watches and his new dimension in time.
Today, featuring high-quality Swiss made mechanical movements the high-end timepieces are characterised by their strong identity, large size, and perfect legibility in all light and weather conditions, alongside their bold and distinctive design.
