Originating in the 1920’s in a mechanical format, the style became popular in the 1970’s with the development of electronic displays.

The early models used vibrant red light emitting diodes. Most watches with LED displays required that the user press a button to see the time displayed for a few seconds, because LEDs used so much power that they could not be kept operating continuously.

The modern era of liquid crystal displays (LCD’s) was soon ushered in. Soon these new digital watches were offering six-digit LCD displays. As the decade progressed LCD technology was also on the march and eight-digit LCD digital watches showed both time and date appeared.

Modern LCD displays offer a multitude of styles including combination analogue time pieces that combine the traditional looks of a watch with new features such as barometric pressure read outs and temperature sensors. Many also include altimeters to record your height above sea level.
