Bulova Accutron Watches from the Watch Hut
The Bulova Accutron watches brand first became popular in its American homeland before spreading worldwide. Founded by Joseph Bulova in 1875, the company has excelled in providing watch wearers at both home and abroad with timepieces that expertly keep time. Today, the watches combine traditional watch-making techniques with contemporary innovations and technology.
Bulova Accutron watches – An electronic classic
In October 1960 Bulova Accutron watches produced was the world’s first fully electronic watch. The system originally used a 360 Hz tuning fork to provide a reference signal to drive a mechanical gear train that turned the hands. The tuning fork was powered by a one-transistor electronic oscillator circuit". More than 4 million electronic Bulova Accutron watches were sold before production stopped in 1977 in favour of today’s quartz based models.
The reputation for accuracy was secured and advancement saw the range take an important role in history by applying its technology in 46 missions of the US space program. When Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon in 1969, a timer made by the company was even placed in the Sea of Tranquillity to control transmissions of data back to earth.
Bulova were also pioneers in the use of TV commercials to promote their products, paying just $9 for the world’s first commercial on New York station WNBT (later to become the lead station of the NBC network) before a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies.
Today the company continues to recognise it pioneering past with its current high specification range of watches.
